Reigning Queen's Statement Before Sign-off
15 days: I’m a planner by nature. I plan every day with the intent to achieve as much as I possibly can.
I planned a lot over the past several years. I planned for what it would be like if I never had the opportunity to become Miss New Jersey. I planned for what I’d do if I ever was lucky enough to win the job. Yet, in all the planning, I never planned for what the end would feel like.
I’ve spent the last few weeks trying to find the perfect words to describe how I feel as we approach Miss New Jersey week. I’ve told myself that it’s not ok to express my sadness because that would make me seem ungrateful for the opportunity that I’ve had. But someone very close to me reminded me that perfect is simply not relatable. It’s my duty to stay true and transparent in the end just as I did in the beginning.
So here goes:
I think it’s important to share the difficulties that come with passing on this job. It almost feels like you’re losing a limb, a part of you. In recent weeks, I’ve experienced self-doubt as I question if I did enough. I’ve tried to stop time and avoid the inevitable as the days continue to pass. I’ve been angry with myself for my own vulnerability. It’s taken me some time to process all of this before finally giving myself permission to grieve the end of this season of my life.
As much as it would be easier when people ask how I’m feeling about the end to say, “it’s bittersweet,” it just isn’t. It’s incredibly sad. This is the best job in the world. I’m not ready to say goodbye. I never want it to end. I’m human. Miss New Jersey is human.
May this post be a reflection to anyone reading, affiliated with the program or not, that there is no shame in struggle. Hitting this emotional rock has really shown me that the very best parts of you, the ones that seem unnatural to lose, are the ones that have shaped you more than anything.
I don’t have a plan for this part, but I’m seeing the beauty in that.
For now, I’m treasuring every last second of these 15 days and finding comfort in knowing that every day is a day closer to another woman beginning a journey that will change her life forever!
