The First Miss America 1921 Margaret Gorman, Miss Washington DC 1921 is the only Miss America to crowned at year end

Wednesday, Sept. 8, 2021, Uncasville, Conn., U.S.: Miss America turns 100! The Miss America Organization along with the tens of thousands of candidates, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters are celebrating September 8, 2021 as the 100th anniversary of the crowning of the very first Miss America.

In 1921, Atlantic City hosted “the most beautiful bathing girl in America” competition in which the contestants were judged on personality, social graces, and personal fitness as a competition. Margaret Gorman won and her title was later changed to Miss America. Over the next few years, the competition became so successful that 1926 Miss America Norma Smallwood made approximately $100,000 in appearance fees, this would equal $1,370,729 today in light of United States inflation.

The talent competition was added in 1935 and that year, it was estimated that over 112 million movie goers witnessed the crowning of Miss America through news reel coverage.

In 1941, during World War II, the duties of Miss America and her fellow contestants radically changed as they served in camps, hospitals, defense factories, USO club, and Red Cross canteens. Some even donned the uniforms of women in the armed forces. Miss America became entwined with the war effort and enshrined in the nation’s imagination as America’s ideal woman.

This effort gave birth to the idea of a scholarship program in 1943 and by 1945 Miss America Bess Meyerson received the first college scholarship in the amount of $5,000.

In 1947, the interview portion of the Miss America competition was added.
In 1954, 27 million Americans watched the crowning of their new Miss America on television, and by 1966 the first color broadcast hit the airwaves.

In 1973, when newly crowned Miss America Rebecca King announced that she entered the competition for the scholarship money; she became the first Miss America to use scholarship funds to attend and graduate from law school. This instantly redefined the organization as a “scholarship program.”

This was further enforced by the 1990s when all candidates were required to promote a public platform and, if selected as Miss America, would bring public awareness to the issue of her choice and a national speaking tour.
Miss America candidates at all levels of competition are awarded scholarships that go toward college, post graduate degrees or college debt. In addition, each candidate must use her year to advance her social impact initiative. Today, each year, over $5 million in cash and in kind scholarships are awarded.

The current Miss America is Camille Schrier of Virginia, who was crowned on December 19, 2019 who will CROWN The Century Year Queen.

For decades, the Miss America Organization has been the world’s largest source of scholarships for women and has allowed many women an opportunity to not only graduate from college debt-free but also to be the first in their families to graduate from college.

The young women who compete in the Miss America system are intelligent, articulate, highly motivated, caring, talented, ambitious and hard-working. They are passionate about executing on their social impact initiatives and are major contributors to public service in their communities, donating thousands of hours in service. They exemplify leadership skills, strength of character and spirit – they touch lives.
