Bhujel finds all women breaking barriers to be role models, and believes in the strength of herself and other women. “Sophiya” means wisdom which is fitting as she is an avid reader and has a hunger for knowledge. She believes that knowledge is power.

Sophiya Bhujel @sophiyabhujel is a businesswoman and freelance model, who recently seized the opportunity to launch her own advocacy project Project Red. This initiative works to provide sustainable and free period underpants to the women of Nepal who would otherwise be deprived of sanitary products. Through Project Red, she seeks to combat period poverty in Nepal and take a step towards menstrual equity and freedom.

Bhujel is no stranger to the limelight or competitions having competed in Miss Global Asian model and Miss Eco International and she is also the Guiness World Record holder for walking up the highest ramp in Mount Everest. She grew up playing badminton with her dad, and still loves the sport along with reading self-help books, dancing, hiking, and exploring new culinary adventures.

Story time: Hi everyone! This is one of the pics from my bikini shoot for Miss Eco International.
Well I still remember that day, all of us were excited for the bikini shoot as it was a sunny day (in winter) so you get me right? Haha! Anyways the location was perfect, the team was AMAZING. we reached the venue we settled down. And then I come to know that my periods started. I hadn’t carried my cup with me as it wasn’t even time for my periods. Girls you get it right?

So one of my team members went out to get a tampon or a cup for me. But to our shock, In a city like Kathmandu , capital of Nepal - people didn’t know what’s a cup or a tampon was. I can’t even imagine about other cities in Nepal. I couldn’t use a pad for my bikini shoot as it would look weird af and cancelling the shoot was out of option.
So I used panty liners for the time being. When my team member got the pantry liners it was wrapped up in a newspaper.

But what I realized that day is that period is still considered a taboo in my country..and we do need more awareness. Period is not a choice and period products should be available everywhere even in a grocery shop as it’s not a luxury product but a NECESSITY.

I have decided to aware people more about mensuration through my Instagram and other mediums as much as I can.
Let’s normalize mensuration.
Let’s talk about it as much as we can no matter what gender we are.
